Introduction to Copyright Law

The author clarifies basic legal thought on copyright law that it is a type of intellectual property that protects works arising from ideas. Some examples of works that can be copyrighted are films, photographs, art works, books, and music. Once a work is copyrighted other parties are not allowed to copy, change, sell, or rent the work without the express permission of the copyright holder.

However, if a party wishes to use copyrighted works in a non-profit seeking capacity they are allowed to under the terms of fair use. Certain materials such as legislations, news, judicial decisions, announcements, and government announcements cannot be copyrighted.
